Being West Virginian AF, I have camped at quite a few campgrounds all the way from Gatlinburg to Myrtle Beach 😂. I am trying to branch out, especially in our good ole Dubya V. This year I decided to skip our fall Gatlinburg trip for a 3 day weekend in Pocahontas County, and she did not disappoint!

Location

You’ll find Boyer Station Campground in a central location to many of the wild and wonderful things Pocahontas has to offer. You’ll be close to Snowshoe Ski Resort, Greenbank Observatory, Cass Scenic Railroad, and BEAUTIFUL mountain scenery. Yall know how some mountains, even in the same range, are different? They just have a whole other mood. It’s why we travel from OUR mountains to THEIR mountains, and why traveling to Pocahontas is worth every winding road turn you’ll take to get there.

At Boyer Station Campground you will find the same beauty the Smoky Mountains has to offer, but without the chaos that comes with Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE GB and PF, but it’s not a place to wind down. If you are looking to avoid overstimulation on your vacation, give Boyer Station a try!

The Campground

Boyer Station is what I would consider a small campground, but just because it’s not an Ocean Lakes style metropolis doesn’t mean it won’t have everything you need. It offers full hookups, a community fire pit, playground, event shelter, restaurant, and motel.

This campground has a vibe like I have never experienced in all my years of camping. It felt like going back in time in the best way possible. By back in time I don’t mean rust and antiques, I’m talking about the people. I have never in my life came across such wonderful campground owners. It reminded me of my own childhood in Boone County when you could trust your neighbor and leave your doors unlocked.

In true Frazer style we rolled in LATE. We didn’t even attempt to check in. We saw our friend’s camper, knew we were beside her and promptly noticed a reserved sign. We proceeded to set up and would iron out the wrinkles of checking in and paying in the morning.

Is this Mayberry?

Morning came, and we were like “Damn, we should pay”. That’s when our buddies informed us that the owners would get the money “just whenever”. I was SHOOK! At any other campground I’ve been to you’re going to have that shit paid either before you arrive or as soon as you get there. I have not experienced that level of trust in our fellow man since I was a child. From what I understand this is how the community is as a whole. I’m ready to move. Who needs cell phone service?

On top of being chill AF about payment, the owners went around more times than I can count offering FREE firewood! Insert mind blown emoji. To be clear, I’m not upset that any campground charge for firewood. However, I do consider Boyer Station offering it to all their campers an amazing wholesome as hell perk you won’t find anywhere else.

Speaking of perks you won’t find anywhere else, there is NO checkout time! Packing up and leaving the campground by noon on departure day is hands down the most STRESSFUL part of camping to me. Not having to rush was the biggest weight off of my shoulders. I got to slow down, take my time, and ENJOY our last day.

Boyer Station, I love you.

Halloween Weekend

Camping at Halloween is my favorite! It gives me the little Halloween neighborhood I always dreamed about but never had; everyone decorates, everyone dresses up, and everyone passes out candy. Living in rural West Virginia not everyone gets to do the neighborhood thing. For a lot of us our neighborhoods are hollers, and our neighbors are actually miles away.

Trick or treating at Boyer Station was so much fun! The campground and campers went all out with decor. Everyone was so friendly. My son had such a good time, he didn’t want to stop!

The Haunted Trail

Aside from trick or treating, Boyer Station offered a haunted trail. The best part about this trail, in my opinion, was they offered two different experiences. From 5:00-7:00 the trail was less scary and better suited for your little kids. From 7:00-9:00 they kicked the spook up a notch for your big kids and adults.

The cost of the trail was $10 per person regardless of age. That included a ride up the hill (and it was a BIG one), and admission to both the less scary and scary versions of the trail. It was 100% worth it the price. The props were awesome and the actors killed it! It was one of the best Halloween encounters I’ve ever had!

Little Things You Should Know

  • When you book at Boyer Station they will not need your email or a credit card. You may end up calling an auto shop. It may seem weird, but it’s how they do things, and I’m not mad about it.
  • The price is $30/night. That is a damn STEAL!
  • There is no cell phone service, but the camp wifi is awesome.
  • The road to Boyer Station is on them back roads, honey. Be prepared for twists, turns, mountains, and hills.
  • You will be out there! Come with your food and supplies. If you happened to have forgotten something there is gas station across from the camp and a Dollar General about five miles away.
  • Enjoy West Virginia in all her glory. Boyer Station is the PERFECT place to do so!

Until next time, Boyer Station. I can’t wait until we meet again!
